RED RUNS WHITE

Lyrics

Verse 1:
God of mercy, so high and holy
Made Himself lowly to bring us life
God of grace, He calls His bride lovely
By love pursues, He defends, and sanctifies

Chorus:
Oh what a joy to be in Christ
Our sin destroyed as red runs white
We’re not our own, but wholly Thine
Oh what a joy to be in Christ

Verse 2:
God all knowing, our strength through suffering
Though battles bruise us, the war is won
God of blessing, each hour sustaining
Our ark of safety through temporal floods

Chorus:
Oh what a joy to be in Christ
Our sin destroyed as red runs white
We’re not our own, but wholly Thine
Oh what a joy to be in Christ

Bridge:
Oh what triumph to abide in Christ
All the saints within His will delight
With the gospel etched within our souls
Daily we die, letting Christ take control
(In Him I delight)

Chorus:
Oh what a joy to be in Christ
Our sin destroyed as red runs white
We’re not our own, but wholly Thine
Oh what a joy to be in Christ

Isaiah 1:18
18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
    they shall become like wool.”
Isn’t this exactly how the Lord draws His people to repentance? As we become aware of sin in our lives, we are beckoned to remember the crimson blood spilled for the sins we’ve committed. While we know that our sin has been covered by the blood of Jesus, the transgressions we’ve committed serve as reminders of the great sacrifice of our glorious savior. This is the first step in our sins being made white as snow, because in repentance, we can’t help but be amazed that the Lord would save such miserable sinners.
It is startling to believe anyone could be so gracious.
It is astonishing to know that our omniscient God, who knows all our days, would willingly save us in spite of yesterday’s rebellion, today’s disobedience, and tomorrow’s offense.
This is how red runs white. This is the development of justification progressing to sanctification. This is what causes those in Christ to live in ever increasing awe and delight. And we should be overwhelmed by gratefulness. Do those close to you see a grateful spirit within you? Would the folks that know you best easily see joy in your life because you abide in and belong to Jesus?
Remember, our God is the God of mercy.
Our God is the God of grace who pursues, defends, and sanctifies his people.
Our God is an all knowing God who uses every trial and triumph of our lives for our good and His glory.
Let’s willingly surrender our preferences, our desires, and our wants for His will and His ways. Delight in the joy it is to be His.
PRAYER:
Gracious Lord,
You are holy and you are wonderful. Condition my soul to delight in being your child today. Help me to call to mind how you have bestowed mercy on my life today. I am in awe of just how much grace you have given, though I am deserving of absolutely none of it. Increase my need for you each day, Lord. Give me a renewed gratitude for the cross, that it may sanctify me and draw me close to you.
Amen.
